What is HiFu?

What is HIFU?

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a minimally invasive procedure that comes with far fewer side effects. It targets and destroys prostate cancer by focusing sound waves on a specific area. The interaction between the sound waves and cancerous tissue generates heat, effectively killing the cancer cells.

How is HIFU different?

HIFU offers the same success rates as traditional prostate treatments but with much lower risks of side effects, like erectile dysfunction and incontinence. Over 50,000 men worldwide have used HIFU to treat prostate cancer, and many men traveled outside the U.S. to receive the treatment before it was FDA approved in 2015.

Has HIFU been well studied?

Yes! Although HIFU was only FDA-approved for prostate cancer in 2015, the technology has been around for 30 years, and it’s been used to treat prostate cancer since 1995. Numerous studies show that men with low- to moderate-risk prostate cancer achieve excellent outcomes, with a 97% survival rate five years after the procedure—comparable to traditional treatments. It also boasts a 97% metastasis-free survival rate.

Does HIFU have side effects?

When performed by experienced, peer-trained physicians like those at Vituro Health, the risk of side effects with HIFU is minimal. However, there can be temporary side effects such as urinary tract infections (due to catheter use) or mild discomfort during urination in the weeks following treatment. If an untrained physician performs the procedure, more serious side effects like incontinence and impotence could occur.

Do I qualify for HIFU?

Each patient is unique, and several factors will determine if HIFU is the right option for you. Book a consultation to see if you qualify for HIFU treatment.
